About 4-5 years ago, I noticed a little cyst on my upper arm. It seemed to be a sebaceous cyst, which is a harmless growth under your skin and nothing to worry about. Still, as a doctor, I knew I should have it checked out, just to make sure.

But I’m also human. And so, like many people, I procrastinated. Yup, I know it’s terrible but that’s the truth of what happened.

A few months ago, everything changed. A member of my family was diagnosed with cancer, and that gave me the push I needed to get it done.

I had the cyst removed and sent off to a lab. Those few days when I was waiting for the results felt like some of the longest of my life. I was almost 100% sure it wasn’t harmful, but the thought kept on haunting me: I’ve waited years to do this – what if that was the biggest mistake I ever made!?

As it happened, it turned out I was wrong – it wasn’t a sebaceous cyst but something else entirely. Without going into technical details, it was both very rare. And very benign!

I was enormously lucky because you shouldn’t take any risks with your skin.

And I was surprised at what a big relief it was to hear I was in the clear. All those years, it had always been a nagging worry at the back of my mind. I was glad to be done with it.
