Botox; the questions people ask us

Published on December 22, 2014 by

Most people are aware of the use of Botulinum Toxin injections to smooth away the forehead lines, but Botulinum Toxin can also be used to raise the eyebrows and outer corner of the eyes, removing the hooded look that sometimes develops with sagging muscles and giving your face a brighter and more youthful appearance.

If you’ve developed a very square jawline or you’ve developed a bit of a double chin, blurring your profile so it is not as sharply defined as it used to be, Botulinum Toxin can be used to improve these too.

Will Botox result in an unnatural look?

In the hands of an expert the results look natural.  With Riverbanks you can be confident that you are being treated by a highly skilled physician with years of experience in the use of this treatment, and who also trains and lectures worldwide on the treatment.

The advantages of using Botulinum Toxin instead of surgery are:

        • Results are almost instant
        • There’s no long recovery period so you can go right back to work
        • There’s no incisions, stitches or swelling to worry about
        • You won’t need a general anaesthetic

Over a series of treatments the results are gradually enhanced, so there’s no sudden change; you just look younger, fresher and wider-eyed.

What does a Botox treatment involve?

Botulinum toxin is a type of protein that is injected by a fine needle directly into the facial muscles to reduce nerve transmission so your face is less active.

That doesn’t mean you will have no facial expressions, but that they won’t create those give-away lines on your face.  The protein only acts locally and doesn’t spread anywhere else in the body. It blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscle so the muscle doesn’t contract.  As the muscles aren’t working as hard the overlying skin becomes smoother and unwrinkled.  The pain is mild to moderate and doesn’t require local anaesthesia.

What is the recovery time after Botox treatment?

The treatment involved only injections with a very fine needle so there is virtually no recovery time and you can get back to normal straight away.  There are usually no side effects, but if you are unlucky, there may be slight bruising and swelling at the injection sites, but these fade quickly and there’ll be no other visible signs of your treatment other than younger looking skin!

How long do the effects of Botox last?

If it’s a first treatment it can last from three to four months initially, although after two or three years the results tend to last longer.  It is not a permanent treatment and you will need to repeat it to keep your lines at bay, but the frequency may reduce as your muscular contractions lessen and your wrinkles smooth out.

Are there risks to having Botox?

Only if you’re being treated by someone who is not an expert.  The Riverbanks Wellness ensures you are in the hands of an expert physician and the aim is to leave you with a natural look, not a frozen expression.  In rare cases the toxin can migrate and may cause weakness to nearby muscles – but this is temporary and lasts a few weeks at most.

Will the Botox injections leave scars?

There are no incisions so no scars – you’ll just look fabulous!
