Pucker up!

Published on February 28, 2016 by

You hear a lot about ‘kissable lips’, but what makes lips really kissable? Think about it – kissable lips are usually full, soft and – if the sales of lip gloss are anything to go by – just licked! Nobody describes thin lips as kissable – and, unfortunately, as you age, you do lose the volume in your lips.
Gazes
In fact, age not only reduces your full lips to thinner versions, but also creates those annoying little lip lines that give you the look of a seasoned smoker, puckered up ready for the next nicotine fix! Even if you’ve never smoked, or given it up years ago, somehow those line appear. Did you know that people look at different areas of your face, depending on the situation you’re in? There’s something called the ‘the business gaze’, that focuses on a triangle between the eyes and the mid-point just above eyebrow level. Then there’s the social gaze that covers all your features with the main focus on the mouth and there’s the intimate gaze, which starts at the eyes and goes down to chest level. Your lips are right in the middle of this area. This doesn’t mean that people in a business environment ONLY look at your eyes – if your lips look good, their gaze will extend to become a social gaze. If you think about this for a moment – this usually means they’ve stopped seeing you as a business contact and are now looking at you as someone they want to get to know better. Interestingly, this is not just a male-female phenomenon – it works the same between people of the same sex – and it’s unconscious. In other words, none of us are aware that our attention is now more on the mouth, but the message is received by our subconscious when someone begins to see us differently. It’s all part of the richness of body language. So your lips are responsible for a lot more of the message that people get from just the words you say!

How to keep your lips in shape

  • As with the rest of your face a good moisturiser is important, don’t just apply it around your mouth.
  • If you suffer from dry lips use a good lip salve stick to keep them soft and supple.
  • Many lipsticks will dry out your skin – choose one with a built-in moisturiser. The same applies to lip gloss.
  • Protect your lips from the cold, wind and sun with a lip salve or other protection.

If you’re looking in the mirror and you can see the reduction in volume and/or the start of those little lines (the ones that cause your lipstick to ‘bleed’) it may be time to take action to get fuller lips. The ‘Rolls Royce’ of lip lifts are:

  • Emervel Lips – a dermal filler that has been specially developed for the delicate lip area. This will fill out your lips, define their shape and smooth out the lip lines around them. This treatment also gives you fantastic hydration for between 6-9 months.
  • Skinboosters – a rehydration treatment and this is really brilliant for softening and fading your lip lines.

There are other treatments

  • Botox® to relax the muscles around your mouth and smooth out lines; but will need to be part of a combination treatment to get the fullness back.
  • Ultherapy – this ultrasound treatment gets your collagen working again, so it regenerates to create that natural fullness – and tightens up the skin to smooth out lines, but this is usually done as part of a full-face treatment.

There’s no single ‘right’ treatment; everyone is different and the treatment or treatments that will restore your lips to their kissable best, will be different from someone else’s.
