Although the scientists tell us that our entire body renews the cells every seven years, somehow the new cells don’t appear to be exactly like the new ones that we had seven years ago, they renew with all the wrinkles in place. It’s really time that science worked out how to get these cells to regenerate like they used to be – that would really be a revolution in anti-ageing technology!

However, for now, there are still plenty of things you can do to fight the visible signs of age and as cosmeceutical research progresses the options get better and better.

There’s no need to hide your lines when they can be banished with a little help. The problem is that your skin gets dryer and hydrates less effectively as you get older, so it’s finer and more likely to show facial lines. Also the natural collagen that gives your face its smooth roundness and volume doesn’t regenerate as well as it did when you were younger. This is why older people tend to have a more ‘hollow-cheeked’ look.

Dermal fillers to the rescue

Dermal fillers have been around for decades, but are much more sophisticated today with years of research and development to ensure patients get a natural enhancement rather than a plastic doll look.

Riverbanks uses Restylane dermal fillers as they are backed by so much testing and continual development that they are completely safe and very, very effective.

These are great for around the eyes, restoring volume in the cheeks and lessening the lines that run from nose to mouth.

The same company, Galderma, also makes a range of very special dermal fillers for specific areas of the face and many of our patients are big fans of Emervel Lips. It smooths out all those little lines along the top lip where lipstick ‘leaks’.

Whilst many people claim they are more likely to happen to smokers as they form when you purse your lips, in fact, anyone can get them and they often appear as the volume in your face decreases.

The third treatment from Galderma is relatively new – Skinboosters. This is not a filler, but a means of rehydrating the skin to improve its condition and plumpness.

The treatment process

All these treatments are injected – and some people are nervous about needles – but the treatment had lidocaine integrated to remove the discomfort and most patients find it a painless procedure.

Of course, there are other treatments such as Botox, Laser skin resurfacing and skin peels – all of which can improve the look of your skin. Many patients opt to have the Harmony Consultation, which explores what you want to achieve – and which treatments will give you the best results.

The secret of a really great result is to be in the hands of a qualified ‘artist’. Knowing the best place for the injections and how to work with very different shapes of face and features is not just a science, but a real art.

If you would like to know more please do give our team a call on 01582 762877, you’ll find us just outside Harpenden on the borders of Herts and Beds, not far from both Luton and St Albans so really accessible. If you’re a bit further away and London is easier, we have a clinic there too.
