Overview
Medication-driven weight loss can affect the skin, superficial and deeper facial fat, muscle mass and overall facial balance, although these changes vary with age, gender, ethnicity, skin quality, and the speed and amount of weight lost.
Treatment may combine collagen stimulation, carefully placed collagen stimulators or dermal filler, radiofrequency microneedling, laser resurfacing and medical skincare, with separate plans created for the face and body.
Options
Treatment can help restore facial balance, soften a tired or hollow appearance, improve support around the cheeks and temples, reduce jowls and improve jawline definition. It may also improve firmness, hydration, texture and radiance while reducing fine lines, crepiness and mild to moderate laxity on the face, neck or body.
Sculptra is a regenerative collagen-stimulating treatment that works with your body to gradually rebuild and reinforce the skin’s structural foundation. Rather than simply filling individual hollows, it encourages the production and remodelling of collagen and elastin, helping to improve facial support, firmness, radiance and overall skin quality.
This makes Sculptra particularly relevant during medication-driven weight loss, when changes in facial fat, collagen and skin elasticity can lead to hollowing, sagging and reduced facial balance. In suitable patients, treatment may begin while weight loss is continuing, helping to support the skin as the face changes.
The results develop progressively, so the face should look refreshed and naturally supported rather than suddenly fuller. Sculptra may be combined with carefully placed hyaluronic acid filler when selected areas need more immediate definition or contour.
Hyaluronic acid dermal filler may restore selected areas of lost support, including the cheeks, temples, jawline or chin. Rather than replacing every area of lost fat, we use small amounts strategically to improve balance while preserving natural movement and identity.
Secret RF is a non-injectable treatment that may improve mild to moderate skin laxity, fine lines, crepey skin and reduced skin quality on the face, neck or selected body areas.
Cool Laser resurfacing may improve wrinkles, sun damage, pigmentation and rough texture.
Skin boosters and medical skincare can provide further improvements in hydration and surface quality.
The face and body require different treatment strategies. Facial treatment must preserve expression and proportion, while body treatment may involve larger areas of loose skin and different technologies.
Treatment Questions
-
Why do you avoid the term “Ozempic face”? add_circleThe phrase can be stigmatising and incorrectly suggests that one medicine causes a separate facial condition. Similar changes can follow weight loss with different medicines, bariatric surgery or other methods, so medication-driven weight loss skin changes is a more accurate description.
-
Should I wait until I reach my target weight before treatment? add_circleRecent guidance from international dermatology experts suggests that treatments such as Sculptra may be considered early in the weight-loss journey to help support collagen and skin quality as the face changes. The timing should be discussed with an experienced aesthetic doctor.
-
Can Sculptra be used while I am taking a GLP-1 medicine? add_circleSculptra may be suitable for patients experiencing reduced skin support, facial deflation or declining firmness during their weight-loss journey. We will assess your expected further weight loss, facial anatomy, skin quality and medical history before deciding whether treatment should begin.
-
Why are face and body treatments different? add_circleThe face contains small fat compartments, muscles, ligaments and delicate structures that influence expression and identity. Body concerns usually involve larger areas and may include significant excess skin, so different technologies, techniques and treatment expectations are required.
-
Will dermal filler make my face look puffy? add_circleExcessive or poorly planned filler can make the face appear heavy or puffy. At Riverbanks Clinic, filler is used selectively to restore specific points of structural support. In some areas, collagen stimulation or skin treatment may be more appropriate than adding filler.
-
What downtime should I expect? add_circleDowntime depends on the treatment selected. Injectables may cause temporary swelling, tenderness or bruising. Secret RF may cause redness, swelling and a rough skin texture for several days. Cool Laser can cause redness, swelling and mild peeling, with the degree of downtime depending on the strength of treatment.
-
What are the risks and is treatment safe? add_circleAll medical aesthetic procedures carry risks. Injectable treatments can cause swelling, bruising, infection, asymmetry, lumps, nodules or an unsatisfactory result. Dermal filler can rarely block a blood vessel, which may cause skin injury and, very rarely, visual complications. Energy-based treatments can cause burns, infection, prolonged redness, pigmentation changes or scarring. Careful assessment, appropriate treatment selection, sterile technique and access to medical support help to reduce these risks.
-
Can loose body skin be treated without surgery? add_circleMild loose skin may improve with radiofrequency microneedling or another energy-based treatment or even Sculptra. However, significant hanging or folded skin is unlikely to respond sufficiently to non-surgical procedures and may require assessment by a plastic surgeon.

Below are three recent publications that have helped shape our understanding of medication-driven weight loss and the role of collagen stimulation and combination treatments in restoring facial balance and skin quality.
This review supports PLLA, used in Sculptra, as a regenerative collagen-stimulating treatment that can improve dermal density, skin quality and long-term tissue support, including in patients affected by post-GLP-1 weight loss changes.

A recent expert review concluded that patients experiencing facial changes after GLP-1 weight loss may benefit from an individualised treatment plan combining collagen stimulation, selective volume restoration and skin-tightening technologies to achieve natural-looking results.

This real-world case series found that combining PLLA collagen stimulation with hyaluronic acid filler improved facial laxity, volume loss and wrinkles after GLP-1-related weight loss, with high patient satisfaction and no serious adverse events reported.
