The Treatment process
Every scar journey starts with a detailed consultation. We examine the type of scar, its depth, colour, and behaviour, and we assess your skin’s sensitivity and pigmentation risk. Because most people have a combination of scar types, this step is essential to build a realistic and safe plan.
Treatment is staged. For example, red scars are often treated first with vascular laser to reduce visible redness. Raised scars may need softening and remodelling before texture refinement. Atrophic scars require repeated collagen stimulation over time. Each stage is spaced carefully to allow healing and natural remodelling.
A course of treatments is usually required. Improvement develops gradually, as collagen rebuilds and colour blends with surrounding skin. Our aim is meaningful, visible improvement, not unrealistic perfection.
How We Decide Which Treatment You Need
We use different treatments because modern research shows that scars respond to specific types of energy depending on their structure and biology. Vascular lasers are effective for reducing redness by targeting excess blood vessels, fractional and picosecond lasers stimulate collagen remodelling in atrophic scars, and ablative technologies such as Er:YAG can soften and remodel raised tissue. Radiofrequency microneedling delivers controlled dermal heating while minimising surface trauma, which can be helpful in pigment-prone or light-sensitive skin. By matching the treatment to the underlying scar pattern, we follow an evidence-based, staged approach designed to improve texture and colour safely over time.
PicoStar: A picosecond laser that stimulates collagen and improves texture in atrophic, boxscar, and ice pick scars, while also helping to blend uneven pigmentation.
DeepSpot Er:YAG: A targeted ablative laser used to soften and remodel raised, hypertrophic scars by precisely resurfacing thickened tissue and encouraging healthier collagen formation.
Secret RF: Radiofrequency microneedling that delivers controlled heat into the dermis to remodel scar tissue and stimulate collagen, particularly useful in light-sensitive or pigment-prone skin.
Collagen-stimulating fillers: Biostimulatory injectables that support gradual collagen production beneath indented scars, improving contour and softening depressions over time.
VBeam (PDL): A vascular laser that reduces redness in post-acne and surgical scars by targeting excess blood vessels, helping scars blend more naturally with surrounding skin.
Treatment Questions
-
What scar types can you treat? add_circleWe treat atrophic acne scars (including box, atrophic and ice pick), red scars, hypertrophic and keloid scars, and surgical scarring. Most people have a combination, so we tailor the approach.
-
How many sessions will I need? add_circleMost patients need a course of treatments, not a single session. The number depends on scar mix, depth, and how your skin heals between stages.
-
What is the downtime? add_circleDowntime depends on the technology and intensity used. Some sessions cause mild redness for a day or two, while others can involve more visible redness and texture change for longer. We plan this around your work and social calendar.
-
What are the risks and safety points? add_circleAll scar treatments can carry risks such as temporary redness, swelling, bruising, crusting, pigment changes, or slow healing. Rarely, scars can worsen. This is why we assess pigment risk, sun sensitivity, and medical history carefully, and why staged protocols matter.
-
Can you treat scars in darker skin tones or pigment-prone skin? add_circleYes, but the plan must be more cautious. For patients who are light-sensitive or pigment-prone, we often lean towards radiofrequency microneedling protocols designed for controlled energy delivery.
-
Will my scars disappear completely? add_circleNo ethical clinic should promise that. Our aim is meaningful improvement, so scars look softer, calmer, and less noticeable in real life lighting.
-
Does treating redness help acne scars look better? add_circleYes. Even when texture is unchanged, reducing vascular redness can make scars far less obvious, and it often improves confidence quickly.
-
When will I see results? add_circleSome colour improvement can show earlier. Texture and collagen results develop more slowly, often building over weeks to months after each session.
