Why Face Wipes are Bad for Your Skin

We live in a world of convenience where we love products that are quick and easy to use – and easily disposed of…. Which is probably why facial wipes are so popular in skincare.

In fact, the facial cleansing wipe market is absolutely booming, with 10 per cent projected annual growth over the next few years.

And yet, when patients ask me about the best way to keep their skin clean and clear, I don’t recommend wipes.

Why?

The truth is that wipes do not clean the skin properly – they simply move make up and pollution around.

They also dehydrate the skin and – even worse – if you have a condition like acne, they’ll spread the infection around the face.

So, what should you use for good cleansing?

The texture of the cleansing products you use are a matter of personal choice.

Some people, for example, like to use a creamy cleanser, which is applied to the skin and then removed with cotton wool balls or pads. Others, on the other hand, prefer to opt for a foaming cleanser, which is applied to the skin and then rinsed off with tepid water.

It doesn’t matter which type of cleanser you choose, but what does matter is that you use the products that are right for your skin.

Here are some of our favourites at Riverbanks:

If foaming washes are your preferred option, then we recommend NeoStrata Foaming Glycolic Wash.

Glycolic acid is part of the alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) family, which naturally exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin cells and allows new, radiant skin cells to grow in place.

For that reason it’s an important anti-aging ingredient, as it helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. But it’s also great for skin that’s prone to excess oil, as it cleanses and exfoliates without stripping the skin.

It will leave your skin feeling – and looking – beautifully clean.

If you prefer creamy cleansers, however, then the NeoStrata Enlighten Ultra Brightening Cleanser may be the one for you! With its beautiful blend of alpine plant extracts, including mallow, peppermint, lemon balm and cowslip (you can nearly smell the beautiful fragance!), this will help to both brighten your skin and clarify it by stimulating the skin cells.

With its patented NeoGlucosamine®, the cleanser will also gently exfoliate dark spots and surface cells – both of which can cause your skin to appear mottled and dull.

Recently, you may have heard ‘micellar waters’ being talked about. These really are the ‘go to’ product at the moment for cleansing your skin. Micelles are tiny oil molecules which are suspended in soft water and draw impurities out without drying out the skin.

The one we particularly like is Teoxane RHA Micellar Solution. This soothing rose water is great for all skin types. You can use it as a standalone product or after cleansing just to make sure your skin is totally clean.

Don’t forget too that, once you’ve opened your pores through cleansing, you then have to close them again with a good toner. Beaute Pacifique Enriched Toner is one of our favourites, simply because it works brilliantly on all skin types. It will help you remove any remaining cleanser, while also reducing any irritation in your skin.

If you’ve any queries about your skin type or the best products for you, just give us a call and we’ll be happy to help. (Priti is a particular expert on this!)

But most importantly, stay away from the wipes. The cleansing effect they give is an illusion.
